The Formal Garden in England

London: MacMillan & Co., 1892. Thomas, F. Inigo. 2nd Edition. Buckram. 8º, 20cm. ; xxx, 244pp.; cream colored buckram with gilt flower urn, topiary and swallows pressed on cover, gilt title to spine, edges tinted green; signed in pencil on fly leaf by author Reginald Blomfield; B. H. Blackwell Booksellers, Oxford, ticket to lower fr. pastedown; covers soiled and spine darkened, slightly cocked, interior very good. Item #117

The more desirable 2nd edition. In reply to William Robinson's forceful essay 'Garden Design and the Architects' Garden' Blomfield released this second edition within the same year as the first with a new, greatly expanded preface. Blomfield and Robinson would come to represent two opposing visions of the English garden, which pitted landscape gardeners against architects. It was a debate that would largely be resolved by the work of Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll over the following 20 years.
